Benefits of Gravel

There are numerous benefits to using gravel to create landscape features, driveways and footpaths. They include:

Versatility: Gravel comes in various types, sizes and colours, allowing for diverse design options.

Natural drainage: Its permeable nature allows rainwater to seep through, preventing water build-up and reducing the risk of flooding.

Cost-effective: Gravel is often more affordable than other materials like concrete or pavers.

Easy installation: Gravel can be easily spread and levelled, making it a convenient choice for DIY projects.

Aesthetically pleasing: The texture and appearance of gravel add visual appeal and can complement any landscape style.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is a gravel driveway difficult to maintain?

Gravel driveways are quite popular because they are affordable and easy to maintain. All you need to do is rake gravel that is spreading out back into position. You should do this as needed, which is normally about twice annually. You’ll also need to control any weeds that penetrate through to the surface. Finally, once every few years, you may need to top up the gravel as it continues to be compacted.

  • What size of gravel is best for a driveway?

Driveway gravel needs to be a minimum of 10–20cm thick. It should be installed, raked out to a proper depth and then compacted with a vibrating compactor (whacker packer) to produce a final product.
